Do charcoal water filters remove lead?
In this study, under-sink activated carbon block water filters were tested for lead and other heavy metals removal in an eight-month longitudinal study in 17 homes relying on private wells. The device removed 98% of all influent lead for the entirety of the study, with all effluent lead levels less than 1 µg/L.
Activated carbon filters are excellent at removing many contaminants from water. This includes chemicals, gas, and physical impurities. NSF International and the Environmental Protection Agency (USA) claim that activated charcoal filters can remove 60 to 80 chemicals from water and reduce 30 more.
The CDC suggests two ways to remove lead from drinking water: Reverse Osmosis or Distillation. Reverse osmosis is a simple and economical way to protect your household drinking water by filtering out contaminants like lead. Reverse Osmosis can remove 99.1% of lead in water.
Reverse osmosis water filters do remove lead. The filtration pore size of the RO membrane is 0.0001 micron or 0.1 nanometer, so reverse osmosis can remove most of the heavy metal ions including lead.

What is the healthiest way to filter tap water?
Activated charcoal can take up impurities, certain heavy metals, and organic contaminants like pesticides, but it isn't very effective at removing germs. Physical filters, whether store-bought and portable or homemade from layers of sediment, are your best bet for removing debris from water.

CR's take: The Kirkland Signature Water Filtration System is a mouthful, but water goes down easily once you use it. It isn't NSF certified for removing lead, but it rates well, with top-notch scores for flow rate and clogging.
As noted above, some carbon filters do remove heavy metals. They can also remove sediment and reduce chlorine and organic chemicals in water. An activated carbon filter is more likely to remove unwanted elements (such as heavy metals) than a conventional carbon filter.
Are carbon water filters safe? Carbon water filters are safe, especially if they've been rated by a third party for material safety. All carbon filters are rated for CTO (chlorine, taste, and odor) removal, and sub-micron carbon blocks remove other contaminants like lead or cysts.

What is the best charcoal for water filtration?
Binchotan (Japanese Oak) activated charcoal is the highest grade of charcoal. These charcoals are from the Kishu region of Japan. Excellent natural properties that help reduce odor and hardness from water, and filter for better tasting drinking water. Filtering time is approximately 3-4 hours.

As a secondary decontamination mechanism, it interrupts a potential enterohepatic and/or enteroenteric circulation (8, 15, 16).
Fridge filters can only remove chlorine from the water. The filters can't remove lead, chromium-6, and other contaminants found in Chicago water. You will likely need a stronger filter to give your home the protection it needs.
